I finished classwork in 1969, at which point I programmed for USGS and a startup company while studying part time at Foothill Jr and then UC Berkeley. Fell in love with philosophy, which I pursued at Berkeley. I dropped out of politics when I realized the war over the Vietnam war was effectively won, during the Nixon administration. I graduated from Berkeley with a philosophy degree; would've had a computer science degree as well, but they retrospectively changed the rules on me (didn't bother fighting it). I went to Indiana to do a PhD in philosophy of science. In 1980, when I went ABD, I got discouraged when one of our graduates received a rejection letter saying they couldn't read his job application (for a professorship), because his name wasn't in the first third of 1,500 applications. (It was all of those 2S deferments graduating ahead of us, on top of baby-boomer demographics.) Rather than change my name to Aardvark, I finished a Masters in CS in one year and got a job in Silicon Valley. I worked the 1980s at Hewlett-Packard, Synapse Computers and Tandem Computers before getting fed up with bad management. The job market had improved, so I returned to IU and completed my PhD, at which point Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and the academic market dived again. The only two likely jobs on offer were a research/teaching job in CS at Monash University, Melbourne, and head a new dept in CS at a regional university in Texas. I was an anti-Vietnam war activist. Seems like many of the Tolkein society (at Jordan) were the same.

Welcome to this site Kevin, your post high school story rang several of my experience bells! Our career choices went in different directions, but similar feelings of abjectivity followed...
I ended up going into the Army and serving in Germany when my career choice was met with "I needed two years paid experience to be hired, but the two years of internship I fulfilled didn't count because they weren't paid, ... Your typical catch 22 conundrum... The Army let me go in as an E3 because I had completed a BS degree in criminal justice, ... I went into the field of military police, not quite the pacifist as you, but I still preferred to settle things with brain, not brawn.... While in the Army in Germany, I met the guy I married... I got out and became a stay at home mom for several years, then came back to the States, he served at Ft. Hood TX for a few more years and we moved onto civilian life in AL, his home state....
To shorten this intro for you we both went into civilian law enforcement, he died in 1996 from medical issues, I continued in LE here in Mobile until I retired 4+ years ago...
But there is a reason for where we ended up, I would love to visit Australia, but finances have kept me on this side of the globe.... One of our classmates, Jim Mountford, ended up in the Phillipines.... Most are still in CA, or on the west coast, but others are scattered across the States.... You're the furthest away so far as I've found so far, but these devices bring us all back together, if only via cyberland ...
